A Tale of Two Tanners: Guzy

Around about 2012 or so, I decided I looked like warmed-over crap. I was in my early forties, but I was out of shape and dressed like a bum. As part of an overall “self-optimization” effort, I decided to start dressing better. That was how I first encountered Tanner Guzy.

Tanner has, as he likes to say, “the weirdest job ever.” He teaches men to dress better, and thus improve their lives. It certainly worked for me, and I owe him for that. More importantly, he was one of my gateways to Latter-day Saint culture and beliefs, and his writing and podcasts have had a profound effect on my thinking over the years.

Some years back, there was a lengthy thread on “manosphere” Twitter about the immense success of Latter-day Saint culture, and particularly the attractiveness of Saint women. This was applied not only to their physical beauty, but their traditional outlook on life that emphasizes chastity, young (by Babylonian standards) marriage, and large families. This culminated in an exchange between Tanner and some random guy.

Rando: Okay, so I’m not Mormon and I’m not going to convert. How do I get one of these great Mormon girls?
Tanner: You don’t.

And thus, with a simple two-word tweet, Tanner inspired a big part of the Many Are Called story.

Tanner’s not just a “style guy,” though he’s great at that. He’s a philosopher, an athlete, a fighter, an author, and a father – and he integrates it all seamlessly. As I once commented on a YouTube video where he was a guest, “With Tanner Guzy, you come for the style advice and stay for the philosophy.”

(To be clear, Mr. Guzy has not, to the best of my knowledge, read my novel. This is in no way to be considered an endorsement by him.)
