The idea behind Many Are Called came from two main – though perhaps seemingly unlikely – sources.
Christian readers will undoubtedly recognize the phrase from Matthew 22:14: For many are called, but few are chosen. A very meaningful passage, to be sure, but I drew even more inspiration from a song by Leiland Tanner, also titled Many Are Called. It’s a great song, especially if you like electronic-style rap music. More importantly, Mr. Tanner is a visionary and a thought leader among young and devout Latter-day Saints.
The themes of Mr. Tanner’s song really spoke to me. I heard it many times as the bumper music of the (sadly now-defunct) Spiritual Arson podcast and on my favorite Spotify playlists. You can see elements of this song throughout The Lion of Deseret, and you’ll recognize them in the rest of the Many Are Called trilogy as the middle and final books are released.
Get ready for the war before the Lord comes…
Hard times are coming, most people can’t handle the truth…
I am blessed by the Rock, no fear, hands up top…
Signs it’s time to sift the crops…
What a frightening sight when His elders of Israel awaken from slumber…
Go give the song a listen. I envision it as the theme song for the trilogy.
(To be clear, Mr. Tanner has not, to the best of my knowledge, read my novel. This is in no way to be considered an endorsement by him.)
